One of the attributes of all successful leaders, is they bring out the best in their people. Here are three simple sentences that you should look at incorporating into your regular conversations with individual team members, and your team as a whole.
“Tell me more.”
As a leader, it’s easy to provide your team member your personal thoughts or insights. Trouble is when you give someone your thoughts you’re failing to get the other person to think about what they might do, or how they would approach the situation. This one simple sentence, “Tell me more” will engage anyone to open up and tell you more about the situation.
“What do you think?”
Everybody has an opinion, and wise leaders always look for ways to engage their followers. Even if you happen to know what to do next, you can use this simple yet powerful question to get people thinking. Also, your team members will respect and appreciate you more because you’ve asked for their ideas, insights, and feedback.
“Tell me how you did it”
When one of your team does something important or produces a great result, don’t just praise them, but asked them how they did it. Everybody loves sharing their own insights, and by asking people to tell you how they achieved something important, you’re letting them know that you care about him or her as a person.
