Leadership can be learnt anywhere.
Do you use every opportunity to grow as a leader? Getting a formal education and find other ways to strengthen our expertise and skills, reading books, attending seminars, observing the leaders you admire, receiving and giving performance feedback, active listening, introspection, thinking and learning from mistakes and successes… These are all important ways that most of us have in mind when thinking of our own growth. But many coaches and authors, suggest us to learn to have fun while thinking and finding leadership lessons in everyday life or even pop culture. This way of thinking will also sharpen our perspectives, show us different leadership styles and entertain us.
Jim Kerr, author and global chair of N2Growth’s culture practice, gives us one fun example on N2Growth website. He offers his interpretations of Clint Eastwood movie quotes. I kindly ask everybody to take this as a joke and surely not get offended, because the idea is to relax and understand that leadership can be learnt anywhere: from observing kids playing in the yard to watching movies. We decide for ourselves what we are going to understand from such situations and if that understanding clicks with our values. As an illustration, here is one quotation Jim chose and interpreted:
“If you want a guarantee, buy a toaster.” The Rookie (1990): There are no guarantees as a leader. You have to be willing to make the call and move on. Your people are depending on you to lead, explains Jim.
